This is a shortlist of the most non-toxic plush toys for babies and toddlers: handknit beauties, patchwork cuties, and some Waldorf icons. They’re all made from and filled with organic cotton, wool, and other natural fibers — and no polyester. When it comes to the loveys, doudous, and stuffies that babies and toddlers chew on, sleep with, and drag everywhere, what’s inside matters.

How We Choose

We start with TEN-vetted brands that clear a baseline bar for regulatory compliance and material transparency. Then we follow the paper trail at the product-level: labels, spec sheets, material disclosures, and testing documentation.

For selections in this guide, we required natural fibers inside and out, natural or azo-free dyes, and third-party certifications which we verified at the issuing source.

There are plenty of great brands making gorgeously fun dolls with organic cotton shells and polyester fill. The TEN family owns some of them too, and we’ll feature them elsewhere. This guide is narrower: organic and natural-fiber soft toys, all the way through.

Our Picks: Organic Soft Toys

You can buy through our links, or not, but do buy from authorized retailers. The market is flooded with counterfeit plush.

Best wool-stuffed animals

Sigikid Organic/Green

Sigikid Organic/Green stuffed animals are both premium and practical with wool fill that’s machine-washable and a durable, organic cotton shell that gets softer with time. The line includes mostly the usual suspects (bears, rabbits, sheep) and some very darling dogs in both stuffed plush and lovey styles. Just note that outside the Organic/Green line, many Sigikid dolls include polyester.

Outer:Organic cotton

Inner:Organic wool

Certifications:GOTS (all materials); TÜV and LGA

Sigikid Organic Bear

Organic Bear

$$

Sigikid’s Organic Bear has the brand’s signature patchwork playfulness, but a more refined execution. It’s a great gift that offers organic materials, without giving up pattern, color, or kid appeal.

Sigikid Organic Fox

Organic Fox

$$

Sigikid’s Organic Fox is the plushiest, cuddliest-feeling pick in the Organic/Green line. The arms on this guy — he’s a whole hug.

Sigikid Organic Dog Blankie

Organic Dog Blankie

$$

Sigikid’s Organic Dog Blankie is a high-contrast and natural material lovey. Floppy ears, knotted feet, and a soft belly give it more comfort-texture range than a standard stuffed animal.

Best organic modern dolls

Apple Park

Apple Park makes dolls and stuffed animals that are more modern and conventionally cute than others on the organic doll list. The corn-fiber fill gives them a bouncier squish than cotton or wool. So they’ll feel more like a mainstream plush toy, but without the polyester plastic inside. Their soft toy world spans baby dolls and soft rattles, “best friend” dolls, and plush animals of all sizes.

Outer:Organic cotton

Inner:Corn fiber

Certifications:GOTS-certified cotton and dyes; OEKO-TEX 100 dyes; TÜV SÜD

Apple Park Kids

Apple Park Kids

$$

Apple Park Kids are the rare doll that genuinely transitions from baby companion to big-kid play. Kids can dress and undress them — and even dress like them if you buy the matching outfits. The full Kids line includes a range of skin and hair tones.

Apple Park Baby Dolls

Apple Park Baby Dolls

$$

Apple Park Babies are smaller and simpler than the Kids, but they still pull a surprising range of textures out of organic cotton — smooth cool skin, sherpa shoes, a warmer velvety onesie.

Apple Park Knit Bunny

Apple Park Knit Bunny

$$

Apple Park’s stuffed animals run a wide gamut, but our favorites are the stylish mod Knit Bunnies. They’re tall, feel substantial in kids’ arms, and their style rivals the more expensive, poly-filled options all over Instagram.

Best all organic cotton dolls

Under the Nile

Under the Nile makes every part of their dolls, loveys, and stuffed animals from 100% GOTS-certified organic Egyptian cotton. They make loveys, Waldorf-ish dolls, fruit and veggies, and odd little soft friends that defy categorization. The look is sweeter and simpler than other organic soft toy brands, their branding less polished, but their material story and price can’t be beat.

Outer:Organic Egyptian cotton

Inner:Organic Egyptian cotton

Certifications:GOTS (all materials); OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Under the Nile Cotton Goose

Cotton Goose

$

She’s lighter and less “heirloom luxe” than Senger’s iconic cuddly goose, but just as floppy and a wink more cute with her polka dot beak and feet. And at half the price, she’s an easy yes.

Under the Nile Fruit and Veggies

Fruit & Veggies

$

Under the Nile’s fruit and veggie toys offer high-contrast color and texture that mesmerizes newborns, comforts mouthing babies, and slides into toy-kitchen play later. They are the rare baby toy that won’t feel irrelevant six months after you buy it.

Best big-gift plush

Senger Naturwelt

Senger Naturwelt animals look like they wandered out of the Hundred Acre Wood long before Disney moved in. They have old-world nursery presence, with a comforting density and lovable floppiness. You can feel their warmth from across the room. We refuse on principle to describe a white plush baby toy as an “heirloom.” But the materials, execution, and durability are indisputable.

Outer:Organic cotton

Inner:Organic wool

Certifications:GOTS (all materials); kbT (wool)

Senger Cuddly Goose

Cuddly Goose

$$$

Senger’s large Cuddly Goose works as a stuffie, blanket, bolster, and hug — and it is an icon for good reason beyond Instagram. The large is the version that justifies the concept. For this shape and the relative size, the large offers more bang for the buck than the small.

Senger Baby Animals

Baby Animals

$$

Senger’s Baby Animals are the gateway into the luxe brand. They offer the same organic cotton and wool material story in a smaller, more giftable form.

Best wool Waldorf dolls

Nanchen Natur

Nanchen makes organic cotton and wool Waldorf-style dolls in gentle silhouettes that feel both handmade and high quality at the same time. The hand-painted faces are simple but sweet with a subtle twinkle, a blush, and tiny half-moon mouths. If you find the mouthless Waldorf dolls with two black dots for eyes eerie (guilty), Nanchen babies are a darling revelation.

Outer:Organic cotton

Inner:Virgin wool

Certifications:kbA (cotton); Bioland and kbT (wool); OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (dyed items)

Nanchen Pimpel

Pimpel

$

Nanchen’s Pimpel is a tiny, impossibly soft organic terry cloth doll with a knotted hat for newborn grasping and mouthing. There is almost nothing to it, and that is the whole point.

Nanchen Mia

Mia

$$$$

Nanchen’s Mia is an investment but with the quality materials and details to back it up. She has combable mohair hair and removable organic cotton clothing. Moreso even than most wool-stuffed dolls, she has a weight to her that feels substantial inside of a hug and helps her sit up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is corn fiber (PLA)?

Corn fiber — technically called PLA — is stuffing made from cornstarch instead of petroleum. It’s the same bouncy, squishy feel as polyester (so the toy doesn’t go flat), but it’s plant-derived, biodegradable, and doesn’t shed microplastics. It’s also naturally resistant to mold and bacteria, which makes it lower-maintenance than cotton fill and a practical middle ground between wool and synthetic.

How do I wash organic cotton and wool stuffed animals?

It depends on the fill. Cotton fill — especially on bigger, thicker plush toys — really should go in the dryer after washing or at least bright sun. Check it thoroughly to ensure it’s dried because it can mold if left damp. Wool needs either hand-washing, or a gentle or wool cycle and a slow dry; expect a faint sheepy smell to disappear after one or two washes. Corn fiber (PLA) washes and dries like a regular stuffed animal. When in doubt, check the tag — but the fill type is the main variable.

What do wool, cotton, and corn fiber stuffed animals feel like? How are they different from polyester?

Polyester fill is what most stuffed animals use — light, springy, and stays bouncy. Natural fills feel different. Wool is denser and warmer, with a slight give that softens over time; it’s the fill most associated with that “heirloom” weight. Cotton is firmer and flatter — less plush, more gentle push than squishable. Corn fiber is the closest to polyester in feel: bouncy and squeezable.
